Rapid point-of-collection testing (POCT) is ideal when you are looking for a fast, cost-effective drug testing solution that allows you to make same-day decisions in a wide variety of hiring, employment, clinical, and government situations.
OralTox® is easily self-administered by a donor, and collections are 100% observed by a test administrator. Saliva is collected via a collection sponge, and results are available in 10 minutes or less.
Yes, OralTox® is the rapid oral fluid drug test of choice with FDA clearance on 8 drugs (amphetamine, cocaine, cannabinoids, methamphetamine, morphine, phencyclidine, oxycodone, and methadone). It also can be used in Employment and Insurance and Forensic markets testing up to 12 drugs on one device.
Due to the chemical structure of different substances, one test strip can often be used to detect several different drugs. In OralTox®, the opiate strip detects 6MAM, codeine, hydrocodone, hydromorphone, and morphine. The oxycodone strip detects oxymorphone. The methamphetamine strip detects MDA, MDEA, and MDMA. You do not need separate test strips for each of these individual drugs.
It takes 1-4 minutes to collect the saliva and up to 10 minutes for results. Negative results can be read as soon as two lines appear (as fast as 2 minutes).
There is a saturation indicator on the OralTox® collection swab that turns red when enough saliva has been collected.
OT-Scan® is a mobile reader app that walks the test administrator through the process of collecting a sample and initiating the test. Once the test has been completed, the administrator uses a mobile device’s camera and OT-Scan® to acquire and analyze images of the OralTox®. OT-Scan® uses a proprietary algorithm that automatically interprets the results, removing the subjectivity of visual interpretation. OT-Scan® test results are available in real time, and the app reports and stores the outcome in Premier Biotech’s secure portal or in Applicant Tracking System (ATS) via integrations.

Once OT-Scan® has read the results of an OralTox® test, the app reports out results to our secure web portal, which is accessible online 24/7. We can also deliver results instantly through an integration. For enhanced security and privacy, results are never stored on a user’s mobile device.

A big difference between urine and oral fluid-based drug testing is the detection window. Oral fluid-based drug testing has a relatively short detection window and is therefore sensitive to recent drug use. Urine-based drug testing typically has a detection window of a few days to weeks because rather than detecting the drug itself, it detects compounds (metabolites) that are produced as the body breaks down the drugs.
A parent compound of a drug is the form that is initially ingested or consumed. In the case of marijuana use, delta-9 THC is the parent compound that elicits a psychoactive effect. As the body eliminates THC, it is processed into other forms called metabolites. Traditional drug testing detects these non-psychoactive metabolites in a person’s urine.
When it comes to workplace drug testing, California and Washington have laws that prohibit employers in many situations from discriminating against employees or candidates for recreational cannabis use. Tests – such as traditional urine tests – that identify non-psychoactive metabolites are effectively prohibited.
However, because oral fluid-based drug testing detects the psychoactive drug delta-9 THC (not the metabolites), oral fluid testing is an ideal testing option for employers in these states, as well as employers in other states who are looking to identify recent marijuana use.
When tests are administered in accordance with our instructions, it is very unlikely that a donor could subvert the test.

SAMHSA and HHS – which are often regarded as setting the standard for workplace drug testing in the U.S. – have endorsed oral fluid testing as an alternative to urine testing. In the preamble to the oral fluid mandatory guidelines, SAMHSA/HHS states:
“The scientific basis for the use of oral fluid as an alternative specimen for drug testing has now been broadly established and the advances in the use of oral fluid in detecting drugs have made it possible for this alternative specimen to be used in federal programs with the same level of confidence that has been applied to the use of urine.”

If the result of an OralTox® test is non-negative, mass spectrometry-based testing should be used to confirm the result. With OralTox®, there’s no need to collect another sample – the original device can be sent to our in-house lab for confirmation along with the necessary chain-of-custody paperwork. If required, an MRO will review the results, typically within 3-5 days.
If you are using OT-Scan®, the process is even easier. If a sample is non-negative, the app will provide step-by-step guidance on how to send the sample to our lab for confirmation testing. The chain-of-custody process is paperless, minimizing the opportunity for costly errors.
Positive forensic samples are stored at the laboratory for one year.
